Apes, anacondas, and now, one of the most dangerous creatures on the planet, the hippopotamus—this is the latest escalation in horror movie creature features with the first look at Hungry.
Hungry follows a group of friends who encounter a ferocious hippo stalking the bayou, far from its usual African rivers and estuaries. While hippos may appear cute, they are statistically among the most dangerous animals to humans due to their territorial nature and powerful jaws.
The film’s premise is summarized as: “Hungry centers on a group of holidaymakers who must fight for their lives against a rampaging hippo on the loose after becoming lost in the Louisiana swamplands.”
The title “Hungry” evokes the classic board game Hungry Hungry Hippos, where players control hippos competing to gobble up the most tokens. Although there’s no official connection to the game, the inspiration is clear.
It’s hard to envision how Milton Bradley could create an official adaptation akin to Mattel’s Barbie or the upcoming Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots movie featuring Vin Diesel. Hungry might just be a race to release a film before an authorized version hits the screens.
Hungry features a cast that includes Madison Davenport, Joaquim de Almeida, Tracey Bonner, Jim Meskimen, Samantha Coughlan, Olivia Bernstone, Michel Curiel, and River Codack. The film is written and directed by James Nunn, with no official release date announced yet.
