However, a potential collaboration between series creator Hideo Kojima and Respawn could have been a game-changer. At a tribute to Vince Zampella during DICE 2026, Kojima shared that discussions about a game had occurred between him and the Call of Duty co-creator after Metal Gear Solid 4’s release. According to reports, Kojima envisioned a first-person shooter set in Solid Snake’s universe, which was one of the early concepts for Respawn Entertainment. Zampella co-founded Respawn with Jason West in 2010 after their departure from Activision amid tensions with the publisher and Infinity Ward. The idea of a Metal Gear FPS was one of the options considered to help the new team establish itself. While the reasons for not pursuing this idea remain unclear, the team ultimately chose to create something original, leading to the development of Titanfall. Kojima and Zampella kept in touch, with Kojima seeking advice when he went independent after leaving Konami to form Kojima Productions. “Without him, the gaming industry wouldn’t be what it is today,” Kojima remarked. Zampella passed away late last year, and his influence as a key figure behind the Call of Duty franchise and Respawn is undeniable. Recently, Zampella also guided DICE through the successful launch of Battlefield 6, which shattered multiple records. Kojima noted that Metal Gear Solid 2 is “often mistaken for a story about AI,” but he insists it’s really about “what human life would become” in the digital age.
