Avowed fell short of sales expectations, yet it outperformed major titles like Silksong and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in daily Xbox player numbers last year.

Avowed may not have hit its sales targets, but Obsidian Entertainment’s fantasy RPG has found success in other ways. Obsidian’s CEO, Feargus Urquhart, recently discussed how both Avowed and the sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds 2 fell short of expectations from parent company Microsoft Gaming in terms of sales figures. “They’re not disasters. I’m not going to say this was a kick in the teeth,” he remarked. “It was more like: ‘That sucks. What are we learning?'” On a positive note, Avowed was one of the most-played games across all Xbox platforms, which includes Xbox Series X|S, PC, and cloud streaming, according to Xbox Wire. This week, Xbox revealed which 2025 titles had the “highest single-day active users,” along with three other intriguing charts. Avowed made a surprising appearance, outpacing highly anticipated titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Hollow Knight Silksong, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, all of which launched on Game Pass on day one. Notably, Avowed was one of the few single-player games on the list, joined only by Doom: The Dark Ages and The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, alongside popular multiplayer titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Arc Raiders, Elden Ring Nightreign, and Obsidian’s own Grounded 2. While Avowed may not have been an instant sensation, it’s encouraging to see it generate enough interest to make it onto this chart. It compensates for its scale with sharp dialogue and intense first-person combat, and personally, I’m always up for more RPGs in the 20-30 hour range. The upcoming PS5 port could potentially boost those sales, especially with an anniversary update that introduces a new weapon, new playable races, and a New Game Plus mode. “RPGs can be divisive”: Obsidian discusses all things Avowed – how it tackled the Skyrim comparisons, the absence of Baldur’s Gate 3-style romance, and what lies ahead for this 2025 gem.
