Breath of the Wild was a groundbreaking shift for the Zelda franchise, marking one of the most successful reinventions in recent gaming history. However, the team at Nintendo didn’t fully grasp the impact of their choices until they witnessed the creative ways players engaged with the game’s dynamic systems.
In a reflective conversation featured in a new book, the director of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, along with long-time series producer Eiji Aonuma, discussed the transition to an open-world format.
“There were moments when I’d see something on YouTube and think, ‘This is incredible! Isn’t this amazing?'” Aonuma shared.
Nearly nine years after its release, Breath of the Wild remains a game I frequently revisit, largely due to its seemingly endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. I still recall various viral YouTube clips showcasing things you didn’t know were possible in the game. It appears Aonuma and Fujibayashi discovered even more surprising player innovations than those.
“It gave us such confidence,” Fujibayashi remarked. “After we launched the game and observed how players interacted with it, we realized we were on the right path . . . We saw that players were exploring new ways to engage.”
This spirit of experimentation inspired the Zelda team to build upon these concepts for a sequel, which ultimately led to the creation of 2023’s Tears of the Kingdom.
“We recognized there was a wealth of potential in what was already present in Breath of the Wild,” Fujibayashi explained. “That’s when I thought we could enhance Breath of the Wild even further. That’s why I believed a sequel was a great idea.”
