Full Remake of the God of War Trilogy in Development
In today’s PlayStation State of Play, Sony and Santa Monica Studios revealed that they are working on a remake of the original God of War trilogy.
The newly released trailer serves as a brief teaser for this project. The highlight of the teaser is the appearance of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos, who brings his signature coolness to the announcement, almost making me forget that this game is still years from launch.
“This project is still in the early stages,” Carson hinted. “Next time we come back, we’re coming with something big.” He also confirmed his return as the voice of Kratos, but that’s about all we have for now.
While I’m thrilled to see Carson back, I can’t help but feel a bit down about yet another major franchise opting for a remake instead of forging ahead with new content. It brings to mind the recent announcement of a remake for the original Halo, set to launch on PS5 and Xbox later this year. I understand that many fans are eager to revisit these classics, but it leaves me concerned that even the most beloved franchises are shying away from innovation and relying on nostalgia to stay relevant.
On a brighter note, during the same teaser reveal for the God of War trilogy remake, PlayStation also announced and launched a new 2D pixel art prequel, which looks like a blast and is exactly the kind of creative direction I’d love to see more of from major studios. Let smaller teams experiment with your franchises through less risky, budget-friendly games. That’s the way to go. God of War: Sons of Sparta is available now on PS5, while the remake trilogy is still in development and years away from release.
