While the best anime can currently be streamed on platforms like Crunchyroll and Netflix, Prime Video is making strides to become a significant contender, with a major new anime release set for 2026.
“Since we are the home for the best anime in Japan, we aim to be the go-to destination for anime content worldwide,” stated Prime Video’s Vice President for APAC & ANZ, Gaurav Gandhi, during a recent online showcase. He noted that anime is a “category truly experiencing explosive growth,” and this trend shows no signs of slowing down.
Among the highlighted titles is the upcoming series based on The Ghost in the Shell, a fresh adaptation of Shirow Masamune’s iconic 1989 manga, which Gandhi called “the most influential Japanese sci-fi work of all time.” Following the legendary films by Mamoru Oshii and the controversial Hollywood adaptation, this cyberpunk series will delve into the relationship between humanity and technology in a futuristic setting.
The new series, which revealed its first trailer in late January, embraces ’80s aesthetics, with animation studio Science SARU—known for works like Inu-oh and Dan Da Dan—bringing it closer to the original manga than ever before.
Prime Video holds worldwide rights for the show—excluding Russia and China—covering regions like the US and UK, with an early exclusive window in Japan.
Gandhi also mentioned two additional upcoming anime series on Prime Video that will bolster the platform’s position. One is a reboot of Fist of the North Star: Hokuto No Ken, which reimagines the classic manga series using a blend of CGI and hand-drawn animation, and the other is the second season of From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman.
“These titles reflect our commitment to delivering both iconic franchises and new voices to audiences,” said the Prime Video executive.
