Fans are buzzing about the potential return of a character in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, who was previously removed from the series’ lore.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse takes the franchise back to its 2D roots, featuring a descendant of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades from Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse, set in Paris 23 years after those events. Speculation is rife that this character could be Sonia Belmont, known from Castlevania Legends and the canceled Castlevania Resurrection, due to her striking resemblance.
Sonia was originally considered the first member of the Belmont clan and was thought to be Trevor Belmont’s mother. However, her status was later deemed non-canon by series director Koji Igarashi, who established Leon Belmont as the first known Belmont. This could be Konami’s way of reintroducing Sonia (or a character closely resembling her) into the official storyline.
“Is that Sonia?” is one of the top comments on the trailer in the Castlevania subreddit, while another user speculates, “I’m guessing it’s basically a Sonia-inspired new Belmont character.”
Others are raising eyebrows at the complicated family dynamics that would make Sonia Trevor’s daughter in this new narrative: “Trevor’s mom became his daughter, ain’t no way.” One user humorously connects it to the 1947 novelty song “I’m My Own Grandpa,” noting, “The first line of ‘I’m My Own Grandpa’ is, ‘many, many years ago when I was 23,’ and Belmont’s Curse takes place 23 years after Dracula’s Curse. Surely this can’t be a coincidence.”
Despite the timeline confusion, many fans are simply excited about the possibility of this long-lost character making a comeback, with one saying, “Getting her out of non-canon jail would be great,” and another adding, “Yeah, at this point they could make her Julius’ time-displaced robo-daughter, I don’t care. Just give me my GOAT.”
In the current canon, Trevor does have two daughters: Ann Belmont, who married into the Morris Clan, leading to John Morris and Johnathan Morris, the protagonists of Castlevania: Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin, respectively. Mary Belmont married into the Helsing family, with Van Helsing being a descendant of hers.

However, these family connections were established in unreleased production materials for Bloodlines (thanks to the Castlevania Wiki), so Konami isn’t technically obligated to acknowledge them since they never appeared in-game. One Reddit user wonders, “I wonder if they’ll go by the unreleased Bloodlines family tree,” to which another replies, “Ann makes the most sense and fits right in the timeline without complicating other titles.” So even if it isn’t technically Sonia, nothing is stopping Konami from creating a character very similar to her non-canon ancestor.
The developers of Dead Cells have indicated that their Castlevania game is just “the beginning,” with Konami stating that there are “numerous new products” in development.
