The creator of Terminator Zero, Mattson Tomlin, has confirmed that the animated series on Netflix has been quietly canceled after just one season.
In response to a tweet inquiring about the series’ status, Tomlin stated, “It was cancelled. The critical and audience reception was tremendous, but ultimately not enough people watched it.”
He added, “I would’ve loved to explore the Future War I had planned for seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also pleased with how it feels as a standalone story.”
Rather than a cold cancellation, Tomlin revealed that Netflix offered him the opportunity to conclude the series with additional episodes, which he chose to decline.
Tomlin explained, “I felt the story I wanted to tell was much longer, and the season one finale left things in a good place. But they didn’t have to make that offer. Good partners here.”
Terminator Zero, a spin-off of the legendary sci-fi franchise created by James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd, followed Eiko, a soldier sent back from 2022 to the brink of Judgment Day to prevent the launch of an AI that could rival Skynet. The anime series earned a solid 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, with our own four-star review calling it a “welcome return to terror” for the franchise.
So, will the Terminator return? As of September 2025, James Cameron admitted he’s having difficulty writing a new script.
Cameron remarked, “I don’t know what to say that won’t be overshadowed by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now.”
