Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the ultimate superhero gathering, but can it match the box office success of Infinity War and Endgame? Each of the previous Avengers films grossed over $2 billion globally, securing their spots among the highest-grossing films ever. No pressure.

Fans on Reddit are skeptical about Doomsday surpassing those figures. “Infinity War was the culmination of a decade-long saga, built on previous films, post-credit scenes, and references. The world-building and storytelling that Doomsday lacks is crucial,” one fan noted, sparking a lengthy discussion about the film’s box office potential. Many pointed out that the MCU isn’t in the same position it was eight years ago.

“Not a chance. MCU excitement isn’t nearly what it was when Infinity War came out,” one user commented, while another added, “There’s no way this makes anything close to Infinity War. If it’s REALLY good, and Spider-Man BND is also REALLY good, then Secret Wars could rake in a lot.”

“Absolutely not. Not even slightly close,” replied another fan. “Even if it’s unbelievably good (which I hope it is, but I sadly doubt it), nothing is going to hit Endgame’s numbers for a long time. Endgame was released at the peak of Marvel’s popularity and was a sequel to Infinity War, which had a fantastic cliffhanger. People HAD to see it. Doomsday feels like a Hail Mary, and everyone knows it.”

Other fans believe Infinity War and Endgame represented “the peak” of the franchise, making it tough to reach that level again so soon. “I’m less certain of its ability to hit 1 billion than I’ve ever been before,” one Redditor argued. “It’s clear that audiences have lost some patience with Marvel, and even their good films (like Thunderbolts) aren’t making money.”

“I don’t know if Doomsday can coast to 1 billion on just the Avengers name; it will need to be a genuinely good film. Plus, it’s releasing the same weekend as Dune 3, which follows two films that audiences enjoyed,” the user pointed out.

We’ll have to wait until December to see if Doomsday takes off or, as some fans expect, falls short at the box office. For now, the film is banking on an enormous cast, featuring the return of the Fox era X-Men, along with the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, and familiar faces like Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.
