Pop star Chappel Roan has revealed her unexpected love for RuneScape, particularly its iconic music, during a chat with synth-pop artist Hemlocke Springs. The Grammy-winning artist expressed her frustration with being labeled as a ‘queer artist,’ emphasizing that people and music transcend such categories. She cleverly likened her album’s vibe to the nostalgic essence of RuneScape.

“Your album makes me feel like I’m listening… I don’t know if you ever played RuneScape, but it’s like,” Roan shares, prompting Hemlocke Springs to ask if that’s “the romance one,” to which Roan clarifies, “No, not that one, but it’s from the early 2000s and has video game sounds. It’s really medieval synth stuff. I’m a video game girl and I love synths and ’80s weird stuff. So when I listen to this… I think Sever the Blight was one of my top songs…” Who can blame her? Just give it a listen.

The official RuneScape Twitter account responded to the interview, thanking Chappel Roan for the mention and inviting both artists to reach out for MIDI files. Now we just need a blocky Chappel NPC in the game.

Thanks for thinking of us, @chappellroan! We love your music—if you or @hemlockesprings ever want the MIDI files, let us know ❤️

This enthusiasm shouldn’t come as a surprise from an artist who once asked The Sims to let her record a version of her hit song, Pink Pony Club, in Simlish and has recently joined the ranks of pop culture icons in Fortnite. Any gamer from her generation is likely to have fond memories of mining in RuneScape.

In a significant shift, over 120,000 players opposed to microtransactions have successfully campaigned for their removal from the MMO, marking what Jagex calls “the start of a new era.”
