Sony Must Nail This Key Element to Avoid a Spider-Punk Movie Disaster
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been one of the most eagerly awaited sequels in recent times, but delays have pushed its release from March 29, 2024, to June 18, 2027.
In the meantime, we’ve seen announcements for spinoffs featuring Spider-Punk and Spider-Noir, both focusing on characters who first appeared in earlier Spider-Verse films. Recently, a trailer dropped for Spider-Noir, a live-action series starring Nicolas Cage, who voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The heads of Sony Animation, Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, also confirmed that projects for Spider-Punk and a Spider-Gwen spinoff film are in the works.
For any of these Spider-People to make the same impact that Miles Morales had in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the trilogy’s conclusion will need to deliver some serious storytelling.
Miles Morales resonates with audiences because he embodies a diverse hero growing up in the multicultural landscape of New York City. He stands as Peter Parker’s closest successor, should Peter ever step back from the role. In contrast, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk don’t carry the same narrative weight or established comic book history, which poses a challenge for their development.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will need to flesh out Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk beyond their father issues or rebellious attitudes. Currently, that’s the extent of their characterization since their last appearance in 2023’s Across the Spider-Verse. The film also needs to provide a satisfying conclusion to Miles’ journey, especially as he confronts an alternate version of himself who has taken on the mantle of his villainous uncle. The success of Spider-Noir is crucial; if it doesn’t establish its own identity, it could undermine the entire plan. However, its unique setting and Cage’s distinctive acting style might help it stand out.
The Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk projects could serve to introduce these characters in a classic superhero origin story style. Yet, they may still struggle to achieve the immediate impact that Miles Morales had, particularly Spider-Punk, who lacks a rich comic history. It seems likely that Beyond the Spider-Verse will spend a significant portion of its runtime building audience investment in these future spinoffs, hinting at the film’s overarching plot. Regardless, the final installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy will have a lot on its plate when it finally arrives. With the live-action universe facing challenges, the Spider-People might be the best chance to create something that truly resonates.
