Everything old is new again as Dan Slott, the writer with the most Spider-Man stories under his belt, returns to pen a new comic series that revives the 2008 era Brand New Day branding. The comic launches in May, just ahead of the theatrical release of Spider-Man 4, which also adopts the Brand New Day name for its subtitle.

Similar to the film, Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day features the Punisher, confirmed to appear in the movie, alongside Mr. Negative, rumored to be one of the antagonists. However, the main villain in the comic is Kingpin, who possesses a crucial item known as The Lexicon, coveted by many, including Spider-Man.

Joining Slott is one of Marvel’s top artists, Marcus To, while classic Spidey artist from the original Brand New Day era, Marcos Martin, will contribute backup features in each issue. The comic is designed to be ongoing, running parallel to the main Amazing Spider-Man series. It’s not entirely clear if the comic revisits the original Brand New Day era, but it seems to serve as a revival for modern continuity.

“Spider-Man discovers one of the most valuable items in Kingpin’s possession – THE LEXICON. This directory of the Kingpin’s criminal empire could reshape the criminal landscape of New York City, and that’s Spider-Man’s mission when he takes it,” reads the official description of Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day #1. “But Fisk isn’t the only one after the Lexicon… Mr. Negative is eager for his rival’s secrets, and so is Frank Castle, the Punisher. Snatching the Lexicon seemed like a smart move to make the city safer, but it’s put the biggest target ever on Spider-Man’s back! DO NOT MISS THIS IN-COMICS CONTINUITY ADVENTURE THAT WILL RESONATE FROM SPIDER-MAN’S PAST INTO HIS PRESENT AND FUTURE!”

“We’ve got an incredible art team featuring Marvel’s secret weapon, Marcus To, and new shorts by the Inkpot Award-winning legend, Marcos Martin!” Slott stated. “With Marcus, this is going to be one of the best-looking books on the shelves, and with Marcos, we’ll have amazing short features that will make it easy for NEW readers to jump right in, even if they’ve never read a Brand New Day issue!”

Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day #1 hits shelves on May 13, followed by the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31. In the meantime, stay informed about all the upcoming Marvel movies and shows in development.
