My favorite indie game inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has just launched a major expansion, effectively doubling the size of the original game. This new DLC takes cues from Tears of the Kingdom, introducing an underground adventure.
One of the standout aspects of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the wave of incredible indie games it has inspired over the years. Titles like Sable and A Short Hike have embraced open-world exploration, allowing players to forge their own paths without being overwhelmed by markers.
That’s precisely what drew me to Lil Gator Game a few years back. Our playful gator can tackle objectives in any order or simply enjoy the environment, scaling the highest points of the island before gliding down and surfing on water. It’s pure joy. Some might even argue it deserved the GOTY title over Elden Ring.
Just this week, developer MegaWobble released Lil Gator Game: In the Dark, a substantial expansion that takes our cheerful hero into an underground cave. “Getting to the caves is as easy as following your nose,” the expansion’s Steam page states. “In the base game’s island, you’ll discover a lil’ entrance that’s been there all along, leading you below ground.”
“This DLC introduces a variety of new toys to play with, including previously unseen item types. Lil Gator can now double jump across canyons with a flick of a gymnastic ribbon and slam down on cardboard crooks from above.”
Despite being out for just a few days, the expansion has received glowing user reviews on Steam. “A wonderful addition to the antics of the greenest hero,” one player writes. “So much more variety in gadgets and fashion to keep the fun coming, and that’s before we even mention the soundtrack and story. Overall, a perfect addition to a wonderfully whimsical adventure.”
Lil Gator Game: In the Dark is available on PC, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a celebratory launch discount across all platforms.
