There have been two notable attempts to bring Charlie’s Angels to the big screen. The first featured the dynamic trio of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu, who enjoyed such success that they reunited for Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. The second attempt, directed by Elizabeth Banks in 2019 and starring Kristen Stewart, received mixed reviews and struggled at the box office.
According to reports, the trio of private detectives is set for another mission, with a new writer stepping in to craft their next adventure.
Sony has enlisted Pete Chiarelli, known for his work on The Proposal, Now You See Me 2, and Crazy Rich Asians, to write a script for a new group of Angels. Sources also suggest that Drew Barrymore may return as a producer through her company, Flower Films, which was involved in the earlier films.
If this comes to fruition, Barrymore’s involvement could bring a sense of reassurance, as her films are often viewed as the standout adaptations of the franchise that originated from the 1976 TV series. Even Kristen Stewart, who starred in the 2019 film, acknowledged that her predecessors set a high bar.
In a conversation with Variety, Stewart expressed her dissatisfaction with her experience in the role. “I hated making that movie. I don’t know what else to say to you. Honestly, the three…you can’t touch [that]. Cameron, Lucy, and Drew…I love that movie. I love that movie! If that says anything,” she explained.
It will be intriguing to see what Chiarelli brings to the table, and more importantly, who will step up as the next high-kicking heroes. Here’s hoping the Angels can deliver a thrilling performance when the time comes.
