Bloober Team Unveils Layers of Fear 3 as Their Next Big Project

It wasn’t their debut title, but exactly a decade ago, the Polish studio Bloober Team made its mark with Layers of Fear. Following the disappointment of P.T., the 2016 release offered a stripped-down, first-person psychological horror experience centered around a painter spiraling into madness reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe. With striking visuals and clever jump scares, Bloober Team set the stage for a variety of projects, including the upcoming 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2. In late January, the studio began teasing a new endeavor, and this weekend, they unveiled Layers of Fear 3.

The teaser is a live-action piece featuring a character who blends elements of Peter Stormare from Constantine and Jeff Daniels from The Martian, albeit with a voiceover reminiscent of a Disneyland actor’s take on Hannibal Lecter. Initially, it seems we’re returning to familiar territory: a man inhaling roses, reciting William Blake poems, and enjoying the eerie company of paintings from previous installments. However, a lunchtime alarm from a smartwatch hints that this story is set in the present, contrasting with the historical settings of earlier games.

In the original Layers of Fear, players took on the role of a painter whose descent into a rat-infested estate and collection of grotesque artwork suggested dark deeds against those around him. The game was notable for its impressive visuals and Bloober Team’s signature mechanic of rooms transforming dramatically when you weren’t looking. Layers of Fear 2 shifted the formula to a cruise ship, where a mysterious character narrated the cursed production of a 1940s film. Despite its unique setting and nods to early cinema, including Tony Todd, the plot felt tangled and unfocused, marking a significant drop from its predecessor. However, Bloober Team has since expanded its portfolio beyond this flagship series.

In a short span, the studio has built an impressive catalog, venturing outside their usual style with titles like The Medium and last year’s dark sci-fi game, Cronos: The New Dawn. Their track record is a mixed bag; the 2019 adaptation of Blair Witch is often considered their weakest, sacrificing the film’s tension and ambiguity for cheap shock value. So, it was a pleasant surprise when their ambitious remake of the iconic survival horror game turned out to be well-received, winning over critics and fans alike.

With a surprising revival of the Silent Hill franchise underway and Bloober Team’s remake of the first game on the horizon, a countdown initiated in January piqued interest. The teaser’s rose motif led some fans to speculate that Bloober might be revisiting Rule of Rose, Yoshiro Kimura’s controversial PS2 survival horror title set in a disturbing orphanage. Kimura, who released Stray Children last year, has hinted at the possibility of a re-release, though he noted it would be a complex endeavor.

Instead, the “rose” in the teaser appears to symbolize various themes: a potential object of affection, a reference to the Blake poem, and a literal flower. We’ll discover just how deep this rose connection runs when Layers of Fear 3 eventually arrives.
