As Dunk prepares to confront his fate in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we’re met with an unexpected delay.
Warning: Spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 5 ahead!
Shortly after the Trial of Seven kicks off, Dunk is unseated from his horse, leading to an extensive flashback of his childhood in Flea Bottom, including his first meeting with Ser Arlan and how he became his squire. While this flashback provides essential context for Dunk’s character, it does interrupt the action significantly.
“I regret having to include a flashback at this moment when everyone is eager for the battle, but it was necessary,” showrunner Ira Parker explained. “I believe it stands on its own and offers a fun glimpse into Dunk’s past. It enriches the story and enhances the conclusion of episode 5… However, I know it might not sit well with some viewers.”
The Trial of Seven concludes on a somber note as Baelor Targaryen is revealed to have sustained a fatal head injury, a fate hinted at in Daeron’s dream. The repercussions of his death remain to be seen, so we can anticipate the reactions of the broader Targaryen family in the sixth and final episode.
In other Westeros news, Dunk actor Peter Claffey has dismissed rumors of Henry Cavill joining the cast in a future season.
