As we approach the release of Crimson Desert, the highly anticipated fantasy action-RPG from Pearl Abyss, the developers have confirmed that there will be no in-game marketplace using real money at launch. Players will only need to pay the game’s price to dive into the world of Pywel.
Will Powers, the PR and marketing director at Pearl Abyss, shared this information during an episode of Dropped Frames. He emphasized, “This is made to be a premium experience that you buy and enjoy the world, and not something for microtransactions.”
He further explained that the game’s pricing reflects its monetization model. “If you do free-to-play, then you need to make up the revenue in a different way. This is a premium experience. That is the transaction. Like, full stop.”
On Twitter, he mentioned that while there are pre-order bonuses, there will be “no microtransactions at launch.” Pre-ordering grants the Khaled Shield, and the Deluxe and Collector’s Editions offer additional exclusive cosmetics.
Concerns arose from Black Desert Online, the predecessor to Crimson Desert, which is a free MMORPG that incorporates microtransactions, albeit minimally. Despite Crimson Desert evolving into its own unique experience, there were fears it might still rely on an in-game marketplace for extra revenue.
However, Powers’ mention of “at launch” is something to consider. First revealed at The Game Awards in 2020, the journey to Crimson Desert has been lengthy, and we’ll finally see what Pearl Abyss has created on March 19.
With a map that’s twice the size of Skyrim and larger than Red Dead Redemption 2, the open-world game Crimson Desert promises to be massive – yet still “incredibly interactive.”
