The latest update in the Reign of Talon chapter of Overwatch has introduced five new heroes—the largest influx of new characters since the game launched. This has definitely shaken up the character tier list, largely thanks to a flying cat.
As a Masters player, I’ll break down which characters are currently the best for the average player. Keep in mind that you’ll need to adapt your character choices based on your team’s composition and the enemy’s strategy, so simply stacking the ‘best’ characters won’t guarantee victory. In fact, that approach can lead to a quick defeat if you’re not adept at using your abilities.
Here’s how I’d rank all 50 characters in Overwatch for Season 1, categorized by role:
|
Rank |
Character |
|---|---|
|
S |
D.va, Sigma, Domina, Zarya |
|
A |
Ramattra, Orisa, Hazard |
|
B |
Reinhardt, Winston, Wrecking Ball, Mauga, Junker Queen |
|
C |
Doomfist, Roadhog |
The newest tank, Domina, is impressively strong (even after the bug fix) when it comes to poking. While Sigma remains the top choice in official tournaments, Domina’s large shield, high damage output, and countering ultimate create ample opportunities for your team.
Alongside these two, the usual suspects like D.Va, Zarya, and Ramattra continue to dominate the tank role. Personally, I’m a loyal Winston main, especially when the enemy struggles against dive compositions.

S |
Sojourn, Ashe, Vendetta, Bastion, Symmetra, Cassidy |

Echo, Venture, Soldier 76, Mei, Reaper, Genji, Tracer |
|
B |
Junkrat, Emre, Anran, Widowmaker, Sombra, Torbjorn, Hanzo |
|
C |
Freja, Pharah |
In the damage role, newcomers Anran and Emre are surprisingly well-balanced, showcasing distinct strengths and weaknesses. However, this means that the likes of the overpowered Sojourn, Ashe, Cassidy, and Bastion are consistently wreaking havoc, each capable of inflicting significant damage with varying levels of mobility and utility.
Despite several nerfs, Vendetta remains a top choice, though she demands a fair amount of skill to avoid handing the enemy free kills. She still boasts the highest win rate among all heroes, hovering around 55%.

Finally, let’s talk about supports. Despite her cute appearance, Jetpack Cat is a formidable force right now, thanks to her incredible mobility combined with a deadly damage combo (thanks to the Claws Out perk) and substantial healing capabilities. Her ability to reposition allies has opened up new strategic plays, like launching Reinhardt into the enemy or giving Cass’ High Noon ultimate a height advantage.
Conversely, Mizuki can be hit or miss. He excels in brawl compositions, especially with Junker Queen, but struggles against poke teams—challenging given the popularity of Sigma and Domina. Otherwise, Lucio, Wuyang, Juno, Ana, and Kiriko (notably for her cleansing Suzu) remain solid picks for most teams.
Taking an average across all competitive ranks (based on official data from the Americas, though trends are similar elsewhere), here are the top heroes by win rate right now:
Generally, characters with lower pick rates tend to have higher win rates across all ranks. This is often because fewer players are using those heroes without fully understanding their mechanics. For instance, Vendetta has a 5.5% pick rate, while Emre has a 27.3% pick rate but only a 48.3% win rate.
In short, don’t just choose characters based on their win rates, thinking that will lead to instant victories. You need to master your chosen heroes and learn how to counter those who typically give you trouble.
