Developer CyberConnect2 is reviving its beloved action JRPG series .hack (yes, it’s pronounced dot hack), and they’ve secured full control over the project from rights holder Bandai Namco.

Known for titles like Dragon Ball Kakarot and the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series, CyberConnect2 has been behind every game in this multimedia franchise since 2002. They’ve just announced the first new mainline entry in over a decade, titled .hack//Zero, which is still in the early stages of development. The reveal trailer is definitely worth a watch!

CyberConnect2 shared on social media, “For .hack//Z.E.R.O., Bandai Namco Entertainment has granted us full oversight of the project from planning to release. This title will be entirely self-published by CyberConnect2. The music is being composed by world-renowned violinist Taro Hakase, setting the stage for this exciting project.”

Currently, the developer describes this upcoming title as a “novel RPG experience that merges the series’ signature blend of fantasy (game world) and reality (real world) with modern expectations, infused with 100% pure CyberConnect2 spirit.” They also assure that it will be accessible for both newcomers and series veterans.

Details about .hack//Zero are still scarce, but it appears to continue exploring alternate digital worlds—think Sword Art Online—while introducing a protagonist who seems to be infected with a mysterious virus.

In the meantime, check out the best JRPGs to dive into right now.
