Despite his groundbreaking work in the FPS genre with titles like Wolfenstein 3D, John Romero, co-creator of Doom, reveals that his true passion lies with World of Warcraft.
In a conversation with a gaming outlet, Romero shared that his most-played game is Blizzard’s legendary MMO, stating, “I have probably 3,000-plus hours in WoW.” He elaborated, “I lived in that game every day for five years, usually playing six hours a day. On weekends, I played as long as I could stay awake.”
Romero’s fascination with the game stemmed from his own work on an MMO, prompting him to analyze WoW closely: “I was studying that game to understand my motivations. What keeps you engaged second to second?” His dedication was so intense that he created multiple characters, saying, “I had 10 characters total. Starting a new one felt like a fresh start, but I knew how to optimize my progress. I could hit level six in half an hour.”
While World of Warcraft is a staple for MMO fans, Romero’s unexpected favorite is Ubisoft’s 2018 shooter, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which he claims he’ll never uninstall. He fondly remembers the original game in the series for its realism, noting, “It’s such a hard game; you could get shot once or twice and you’re dead.”
Regarding the 2019 installment, Romero expressed that after two decades since the original, it felt like a new era for Ghost Recon. “It’s open world, with hundreds of levels. In Breakpoint, you can hop in a helicopter at night and see all the lights from every installation. The sheer amount of content is insane, even if they had to rush it out in a year and a half.” At least one Ghost Recon fan can rest easy knowing he enjoys the latest entry in the franchise.
John Romero also gives a nod to Doom’s Super Shotgun, declaring it “the most satisfying weapon in gaming history,” and he’s absolutely right.
