The N64 controller in my favorite color is surprisingly tough to track down on Amazon, but it’s available.
I can’t help but admire the classic gray N64 controller from 8Bitdo more than I care to admit. However, if you search for it on Amazon, you might be surprised to find it missing from the results. So, consider this a heads-up: it does exist there, and I’ll be a bit envious if you manage to snag one.
You’ll want to look for the 8BitDo N64 Bluetooth Controller for Analogue 3D, priced at $44.99 on Amazon. It’s puzzling why it doesn’t show up in searches, as it seems the retailer is favoring the white version at the moment. If you’ve been on the hunt for what I’d call the best retro controller for the Nintendo 64, now you know where to find it.
For whatever reason, the gray 8Bitdo N64 controller doesn’t appear in Amazon’s search results. Fortunately, I have the link, and you can still grab this authentic gamepad. Just keep in mind that the black and white versions often drop below $30, so you’re paying a premium for those vibrant buttons.
In the UK, it’s available for £34.99 on Amazon.
It’s worth noting that the gray version is identical to the 8Bitdo N64 controller I reviewed before the Analogue 3D hit the market. This wireless pad was primarily designed for the new 4K FPGA remake but also connects seamlessly to the Switch, PC, Android devices, and even your original Nintendo 64 with a wireless adapter.
I use a Blueretro Bluetooth dongle for my Nintendo 64, which costs around $10 on AliExpress. This adapter allows you to sync up to four controllers for some nostalgic GoldenEye sessions. After hours of testing the 8Bitdo pad with this setup, I can confirm it works flawlessly. I didn’t notice any significant latency, and it made my HDMI-modded N64 feel like a budget Analogue 3D.
While there are plenty of modern N64 controllers available, $44.99 is a bit steep for a controller with just one stick. However, as someone who has spent years using various third-party Nintendo 64 controllers, emulation setups, and the Switch Online Library, I can confidently say this is the next best thing to the original.
If anything comes close, it’s Hyperkin’s hall-effect joystick that I recently used to mod my official N64 controller. It offers similar accuracy and sensitivity to the 8Bitdo pad, but I think the Analogue 3D accessory has a slight edge. Both feel better than Nintendo’s Switch Online pad, which, while functional, doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of precision.
As we approach the 40th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, many of you might be looking for a fitting controller to revisit your favorite adventures in Hyrule. The gray version is mainly for aesthetics, featuring the same iconic blue, green, yellow, and red buttons as the N64 you remember, while the original white and black versions are designed to complement Analogue’s new 4K console.
If you grew up in the ’90s and have a soft spot for transparent tech, you’ll be excited to know that 8Bitdo has also released see-through versions of its N64 controller to match limited-edition systems like the upcoming Analogue 3D “Prototype” range. These versions, along with the previously released “Funtastic” editions, are still available for $44.99, despite being labeled as “limited quantities,” so be sure to check them out before they sell out.
