A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms raised the stakes this week. After a season that leaned heavily on humor and the camaraderie between Dunk and Egg, the penultimate episode delivered the intense Trial of Seven.
Warning: major spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 5 ahead, so proceed with caution if you’re not caught up!
Following Dunk’s altercation with Prince Aerion and the accusation of kidnapping his new squire Egg, he faced a Trial of Seven. Gritty and brutal, the clash between Dunk, Aerion, and the knights who stood with them ended in bloodshed (RIP Baelor). While it may not have matched the scale of the epic battles from Game of Thrones, fans are all in.
“The level of grittiness is unlike anything we’ve seen in the GoT universe. It’s not overly cinematic, just personal and visceral,” one fan shared on Reddit.
“This might be one of the best episodes of television I’ve seen in a while—genuinely cinematic for Thrones fans and just solid medieval fantasy,” another chimed in.
“Good people dying. This is what GOT is all about,” remarked another viewer. “We are so back.”
“I’m glad I didn’t know what was coming because Baelor’s death hit hard,” someone else noted. “I wasn’t expecting that at all. I wish we could have seen more of Lyonel fighting the Kingsguard.”
Others appreciated the episode’s subtler moments. “I love how they show the effectiveness of armor,” another user commented. “Dunk leaning into blows to leverage his armor for grappling was fantastic.”
The episode also featured a flashback to Dunk’s childhood, revealing his first encounter with his late mentor, Ser Arlan. “I hate that we had to include a flashback when everyone just wants the battle, but it was necessary,” showrunner Ira Parker explained. “I think it stands on its own and adds depth to Dunk’s character, enhancing the impact of episode 5’s conclusion… But, yeah, it might not please everyone.”
Despite this, fans seemed to enjoy it. “Loved the episode. The flashback didn’t feel too intrusive,” another viewer said. “I think the B-plot helped the fight scene really shine.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is airing weekly on HBO and HBO Max in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Stay updated with the release schedule or check out our review for more insights.
