Takuto Edagawa, chief director of Pokopia at Koei Tecmo, shared that his team was “very focused” on crafting dialogue for each Pokémon in the game. Kanako Murata, the producer at The Pokémon Company, praised the extensive conversations between Pokémon as “top class.”

In a translated interview, Edagawa, Murata, and Shigeru Ogawa, the game’s director at Game Freak, discussed the significant amount of dialogue in Pokopia, highlighting how it reflects each species’ “unique personality.”

While Pokémon typically express themselves through animations in most games, a few allow for full conversations. The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series is a standout, letting players experience life as a Pokémon and form friendships as equals. However, this is a rare exception in the franchise.

“Honestly, I didn’t think [the team] could generate so many unique lines,” Ogawa admitted. “It’s all thanks to Koei Tecmo’s deep understanding of Pokémon.” Edagawa added, “We felt it was crucial to capture every Pokémon’s unique personality, so we dedicated ourselves to writing.”

Ogawa elaborated on how Edagawa and his team’s “labor-intensive” work resulted in “a huge amount of dialogue” in Pokopia, which posed challenges for localization while maintaining each Pokémon’s character.

“In terms of dialogue volume, I believe it’s top class compared to previous Pokémon games,” Murata stated. “Moreover, during localization, we were meticulous in ensuring that all conversational tones were accurately translated into every language.”

It seems that saying ‘my friend Malamar’ could soon become a reality.
