Metal Gear Solid 4 Remaster Will Not Include Online Multiplayer

Konami is set to bring the 2008 PlayStation 3 exclusive, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, to modern platforms. However, fans of the series will be disappointed to learn that the beloved Metal Gear Online modes won’t be making a comeback. Those modes will remain a nostalgic piece of gaming history.

Although it wasn’t highlighted during the PlayStation State of Play reveal last year, Konami has confirmed on the official page for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 that “METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots– Master Collection Version of the Patriots does not include METAL GEAR ONLINE.” It seems that the landscape of warfare has indeed evolved.

Metal Gear Solid Online was known for its unique blend of gameplay, featuring stealth deathmatches, capture missions, bombing runs, and sneak-offs. While titles like Call of Duty were embracing fast-paced respawns and chaotic battles, Metal Gear offered a more tactical and methodical online experience, allowing players to stealthily navigate and collect dog tags in a way that’s still quite rare, even in the crowded live service market of 2026. It would have been exciting to see some iteration of MGSO included in the new remaster, but it’s understandable that Konami opted out, considering the extensive effort that would be needed to revive it.

Fortunately, there are still some exciting alternatives. Unlike MSG4, the remaster of Peace Walker will include online co-op operations and versus modes. The co-op mode supports two to four players, while the versus mode accommodates up to six. Local wireless multiplayer will be available, but only on the Switch. Additionally, there’s the Fox Hunt mode that Konami released last year for Metal Gear Solid Delta.

On the PC front, modders are actively working to unofficially revive Metal Gear Solid Online for players. With a modern version of MSG4, modders will have even more tools at their disposal than they did with the notoriously tricky tech of the original PS3.
