Fallout 3 is famously drenched in green—a color that game director Todd Howard was adamant about perfecting. Interestingly, co-creator Tim Cain was unaware of this before the game launched due to his colorblindness.
Bethesda has discussed Fallout 3’s “great green debate” extensively, noting that if art lead Istvan Pely made any adjustments during development, Howard would immediately notice and comment, “You changed the green.” Producer Craig Lafferty humorously mentioned he “lost count” of how many times they revised the color green, highlighting the ongoing debate among fans. Yet, Cain, for obvious reasons, was oblivious to the controversy.
In a recent interview, Cain recounted his experience at E3 2008, where Howard invited him to see Fallout 3 before its release. He was amazed by the developers’ interpretation of Washington, D.C. “I grew up right outside of Washington, D.C., so when Todd invited me up to see Fallout 3 at E3 2008 – this was before it shipped – I was blown away because I was like, ‘Wow, that looks like the Metro station! And that there’s the Washington Monument!'” He added with a laugh, “And I’m colorblind, so the whole greenish tint thing didn’t apply to me.”
Even if Cain had been aware of the radioactive hues, it seems unlikely Howard would have been swayed, given previous comments from other developers.
“Todd would call out, ‘I don’t think that’s the right green. I think you should take another look at it,'” Pely recalled. “And I’m like, I’m pretty sure it is.'”
Fallout 3 experienced “the opposite of feature creep” because Bethesda developers were adept at cutting features they knew they couldn’t implement.
