The God of War franchise has embraced the phrase “Boy,” thanks to Kratos’ journey since the 2018 reboot. This playful nod continues in the new side-scrolling Metroidvania, God of War: Sons of Sparta, where the difficulty menu features a direct reference to Atreus.

When selecting your playstyle for Kratos’ latest adventure, you have three choices: Spartan for the hardcore experience, Cadet for a balanced challenge, and Boy for the easy mode—an amusing reminder of your choice. Just as Atreus seeks his father’s approval throughout the 2018 game and its sequel, Ragnarok, players are also reminded of their decision when opting for the easiest setting.

This brings to mind the classic “I’m Too Young To Die” from Doom, a way of saying you’re not quite ready for the tougher challenges. If the aim of developers Mega Cat Studios and Sony Santa Monica was to motivate players to push their limits, it seems to have hit the mark.

Fans are having a blast with the clever naming. One user on Twitter quipped, “Now I have to choose Spartan because I don’t want to be called BOY.” Another chimed in, “Whoever came up with that should get a raise,” while a third remarked, “Second best name for a difficulty level after having God Mode as Normal in God of War 3.”

Of course, some comments poke fun at the description, which suggests this mode is for those who just want to enjoy the story. Ultimately, how players choose to engage with a game is personal, and this seems more like a lighthearted joke than an insult. After all, those easier difficulties can look pretty tempting when you’re stuck on a challenging encounter. We might all find ourselves playing on Boy mode at some point.

A remake of the God of War Greek trilogy is officially in the works, but it’s still in the early stages of development, and the team is asking for your patience.
