In a surprising move, Konami has removed several titles from digital storefronts ahead of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 release.

Delistings are becoming all too common in the gaming world, with classic titles disappearing from stores regularly due to various rights issues. We’ve seen this happen with games like Marvel vs. Capcom, The Simpsons Arcade Game, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. Sometimes, these removals are strategic, nudging players toward newer versions, as Rockstar did when it pulled GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas in favor of the less-than-stellar Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

Metal Gear titles have faced similar fates before; for instance, historical footage in Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 led to their removal in 2021. This time, however, it appears that Konami might be following a similar path.

After the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, fans quickly noticed that Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3, along with Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker and its HD console version, have vanished from the PS3, PSP, and Xbox stores. This means that the upcoming collection will be the only way to access these games digitally. I’ve checked the PS3, Vita, and Xbox Stores myself, and can confirm that these titles are indeed gone.

This situation is particularly frustrating for Xbox One users, as Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 won’t be available on that last-gen console. As it stands, the only way to play Peace Walker on that platform is to hunt down a physical copy. It’s a tough break, especially with the collection still six months away, leaving players without access to these classics in the meantime.

As odd as it may sound, I genuinely hope this is just a tactic to encourage players to embrace the new edition. The Monster Hunter content and The Carpenters’ music are vital to the Peace Walker experience, and their absence in a future re-release would be a significant loss.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker co-op, inspired by the Monster Hunter craze, lives on in Master Collection Volume 2
