In the Silent Hill 2 Remake, there are eight different endings based on your choices and gameplay style. Your actions and decisions throughout the game can significantly influence the outcome, including subtle interactions, like how you treat Maria.

Below, we’ll explore each ending in the Silent Hill 2 Remake, detailing how to unlock them and discussing which might be considered the best. Keep in mind that some endings are only accessible in New Game Plus, meaning you’ll need to complete the game at least twice.

There are eight possible endings in the Silent Hill 2 Remake, which I’ve outlined below, along with whether they can be unlocked in a first playthrough or only in New Game Plus:

The last two endings, “Bliss” and “Stillness,” are new additions created specifically for the Remake, while the others are reimagined from the original 2001 version. During your first playthrough of the Silent Hill 2 Remake, you can achieve any of the first three endings—Leave, In Water, or Maria. In subsequent New Game Plus runs, you’ll have the chance to unlock all eight endings, including the first three.

Here’s a breakdown of what you need to do to unlock each ending without revealing the specifics of what they entail.

The “Leave,” “In Water,” and “Maria” endings in Silent Hill 2 rely on a hidden points system. The game continuously evaluates your actions, aiming to gauge James’s feelings about himself, his circumstances, and others based on your choices, both in and out of combat.

Some endings hinge on James’s concern for the characters he encounters, such as helping Maria if she’s in danger. Conversely, how well he defends or heals himself, indicating a sense of self-preservation, also plays a role.

It’s a complex system, especially since there’s no clear visibility on what’s being tracked, but I’ll outline the key actions that influence your outcomes below.

To achieve the “Leave” ending, complete the game under these conditions:

You need to meet two criteria: James must demonstrate a high level of self-preservation while showing minimal interest in either Maria or Mary.

Healing frequently is the easiest way to ensure this—stay healthy, and you should be fine, even if you break some other rules.

The “In Water” ending is achieved by completing the game under these conditions:

This time, you need to portray James as someone with low self-preservation while focusing on Mary—but NOT Maria.

To unlock the “Maria” ending, complete the game while doing the following:

Here, you need to show high self-preservation for James while prioritizing Maria over Mary.

This is likely the most challenging of the three “first playthrough” endings to achieve, as keeping Maria safe and content can be tricky, especially since even minor interactions can negatively impact your progress.

The Silent Hill 2 Rebirth ending is exclusive to New Game Plus and requires you to find four special items during your playthrough.

Once you collect all four items, finishing the main story will automatically trigger the “Rebirth” ending, regardless of your choices or actions throughout the game.

This can only be overridden by meeting the specific conditions for the endings listed after this one.

The iconic Silent Hill 2 Dog ending is also specific to a New Game Plus playthrough and is unlocked through this process:

The Silent Hill 2 UFO ending in the Remake is another NG+ exclusive, achieved by following these steps:

Fulfill all these criteria, and the last time you investigate the Blue Gem in room 312, it should trigger the UFO ending in Silent Hill 2.

The Silent Hill 2 Bliss ending is a new option created specifically for the Remake and is also exclusive to NG+. Here’s how to unlock it:

The Silent Hill 2 Stillness ending is another new addition made for the Remake, requiring NG+. Here’s how to achieve it.

Warning: this section contains spoilers for the plot of Silent Hill 2 Remake and its endings.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake doesn’t have a definitive “best” ending; it’s all subjective. It depends on your interpretation of James, his actions, and what he truly deserves after his past.

Some endings are undeniably darker than others. The “Maria” ending suggests James continues to ignore the worst aspects of his actions toward Mary, implying a cycle of violence may repeat. Given Maria’s coughing on the way back to the car and James’s ominous suggestion to “get that sorted,” it’s hard to view that as the best outcome.

In contrast, the “Leave” ending offers him absolution and a chance to move forward, while “In Water” culminates in suicide, with James overwhelmed by guilt. Whether he deserves forgiveness is a matter of personal opinion.

From there, the endings become increasingly extreme or bizarre. “Rebirth” hints at James using ancient powers to resurrect Mary, which could lead to dire consequences. The new endings in the Remake span the emotional spectrum: “Bliss” provides a happy ending rooted in nostalgia, while “Stillness” serves as a darker twist on “In Water.”

Ultimately, there’s no clear good or bad ending in a game as intricate as Silent Hill 2, and perhaps there shouldn’t be. What you consider the “best” ending is entirely up to your interpretation of James’s tragic journey.
