This license plate conceals a clever backup camera cleaner.
A startup from Vermont has unveiled an innovative upgrade kit that introduces a remotely activated backup camera cleaner for your vehicle. The Lens Lizard system may seem like a luxury to some, but for those battling winter ice and snow or navigating dirt roads, this upgrade can save you the hassle of constant manual cleaning.
The creators are launching the Lens Lizard via a crowdfunding campaign, allowing backers to preorder the kit at a discounted price of $99. The expected retail price will be around $149, with shipping set to begin in April 2026.
Since 2018, backup cameras have been a requirement for new vehicles, but integrated cleaning systems are still rare and often pricey. While some brands like Subaru, Toyota, and VW offer this feature, it’s typically found only in higher-end trim levels. The Lens Lizard serves as an aftermarket solution compatible with “most North American vehicles,” provided the backup camera is positioned above the rear license plate.
The Lens Lizard is designed as a compact module that installs behind your license plate using existing screw holes and minimal tools. It includes a refillable wiper fluid reservoir that sprays the backup camera with fluid via an adjustable high-pressure pump.
The reservoir and the removable rechargeable battery that powers the pump are said to last between four to six months, depending on usage. For added convenience, the Lens Lizard operates independently of your vehicle’s electrical system, allowing you to activate it remotely—even while driving—using a wireless Bluetooth remote.
