Dropout TV’s new venture caters to millennials by bringing back cable TV.
Dropout is diving into a wave of nostalgia-driven innovation. Following the recent announcement of two seasons of Game Changer being released on Blu-ray (which sold out in no time), the streaming platform is set to make a bold move: reintroducing cable TV.
In a social media video shared on Tuesday, Dropout CEO Sam Reich unveiled Dropout 24/7, a continuous livestream channel dedicated to airing Dropout content around the clock. Launching on February 18 at 3 p.m. EST, the channel will kick off with the beloved actual play series Dimension 20, showcasing episodes from the very beginning all the way through the latest season, Gladlands. After Dimension 20, the channel will expand to feature other popular shows like Very Important People and Game Changer, along with hidden gems like Kingpin Katie and Ultramechatron Team Go.
Reich emphasizes that Dropout 24/7 aims to replicate the experience of “regular TV.” Back in the day, cable was the go-to for mindlessly tuning into a Top Chef marathon or getting lost in a series of back-to-back Law & Order: SVU episodes, which somehow became the ultimate comfort viewing. (SVU is currently in its 27th season—can you believe it?) Cable also offered the thrill of stumbling upon your next favorite show while flipping through channels, a serendipity that’s often lost when you’re deliberately selecting what to watch. Who knows, you might just find that Troopers becomes your new obsession.
While the video lacks extensive details, Dropout has provided a 24/7 FAQ addressing some key points: the channel will be exclusive to Dropout subscribers via the Dropout.tv app and won’t be available on YouTube for the time being. The FAQ also mentions that subscribers have been requesting this channel as a way to enjoy Dropout content like traditional broadcast TV. Sometimes, when faced with an overwhelming array of choices, what we really crave is someone else curating a marathon for us. Oh, how we’ve missed the simplicity of cable TV.
Just as the Game Changer Blu-ray announcement hinted at more physical media if the release was successful (which it clearly was), Reich teased the possibility of additional 24/7 channels for Dropout if this one resonates with viewers. Special broadcasts, event weekends, and “bonus videos” are all potential additions.
As for when Avengers: Endgame will make its way to the platform, that remains a mystery for now.
