Even the most cherished video games face criticism, but it’s rare for that critique to come from the creators themselves. This was the case during a recent playthrough of The Witcher 1 by lead narrative designer Artur Ganszyniec, who expressed his frustration during an action sequence in the game’s epilogue but took full responsibility for the mishap.
Ganszyniec recently wrapped up his 26-part series, where he revisited the first Witcher for the first time in two decades. At around the 23-minute mark in the latest video, he accidentally attacked an elf, leading to a situation where he had to either “kill them all” or revert to an earlier save.
“That’s the unfortunate part; I mistakenly attacked an elf, and now I have to kill them all, which I didn’t want to do,” Ganszyniec remarked. “But hey, this is war, and I should have been more careful with group style.”
He candidly noted that the epilogue was a last-minute addition made late in the game’s development, after the project lead decided to “find some extra time” for a meaningful conclusion. Ganszyniec and the lead worked on it during late-night sessions after their regular development hours. In his view, this rushed effort resulted in an epilogue with some rough patches.
“I was primarily responsible for implementing the epilogue, so I can only blame myself for what’s happening here,” he admitted.
Later, around the 30:10 mark in the video, Ganszyniec encountered another frustrating moment when he attempted to meditate but was unable to because the fire in front of him was unlit, and spells can’t be cast in safe zones.
“That was really stupid. I can’t cast Igni here because it’s a safe location,” he said. “Maybe there’s something to loot here. Where are the bodies? No bodies here. That is extremely stupid design. Artur, you should be ashamed.”
As they say, we are often our own harshest critics.
Ahead of The Witcher 1 remake, the original RPG story lead revealed that the ending cutscene was created without significant input from the story team, which he acknowledged as a “mistake.”
