Chris Hemsworth believes they should have been more “careful” not to push the goofy tone of Thor: Love and Thunder too far.

During a chat on the Smartless podcast, the Marvel star openly admitted that they “took the piss probably a little too much” with the film, noting that they were encouraged to amplify the irreverent humor after the success of its predecessor, Thor: Ragnarok.

“There are variations. But you do have to be cautious because when we made Ragnarok, it was quite a twist, you know, and in Taika’s style. It was so enjoyable, and there was a huge appreciation for that shift,” Hemsworth shared with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. “Then Love and Thunder felt like a Monty Python sketch, and we sort of took the piss probably a bit too far, which led to some backlash, you know? There was a real kind of, ‘why is he a goofball and why is it this?'”

He added that writer-director Taika Waititi and the cast were simply “having fun” and “trying something different.”

Featuring Chris Pratt (as Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Tessa Thompson (as King Valkyrie), Russell Crowe (as Zeus), and Christian Bale (as Gorr the God Butcher), Thor: Love and Thunder follows the titular hero as he seeks to understand his life’s purpose while dealing with the unexpected return of his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who has taken up Mjolnir and adopted the title ‘Mighty Thor’.

The film received mixed reviews, earning a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to Ragnarok’s impressive 93%.

Hemsworth is set to reprise his role as Thor in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and based on his pre-Avatar teaser, he won’t be the only familiar face returning. His real-life daughter, India Rose, will also appear as Thor’s daughter Love in the superhero film.
