Despite the cancellation of the Last Ronin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, co-creator Kevin Eastman believes it could still see the light of day.

The comic follows Michelangelo on a quest for vengeance after the loss of Master Splinter and his brothers. Although the R-rated live-action adaptation was put on hold last year, another live-action project is in the works.

“I don’t think the movie’s off the table,” Eastman shared. “I think it’s just delayed.”

A previous report indicated that while the project was shelved, there’s still potential for it to be revisited, though Paramount executives were reportedly hesitant about reviving a live-action film with such a violent narrative.

“Talking with everyone at Viacom, Paramount, and Nickelodeon who are passionate about the Turtles, I believe it will happen,” Eastman continued. “They know how much fans cherish the Last Ronin, just as another group of fans appreciates everything Point Grey has done with the Mutant Mayhem series. We’re not discouraged at all.”

Judith Hoag, who portrayed April O’Neil in the 1990 live-action film, has confirmed she was approached to be part of The Last Ronin. “I’ve been approached, and I’d be thrilled. It would be a great conclusion for me. Whether it happens or not, we’ll see,” she stated.

In the meantime, a prequel comic titled Training Day is on the way, co-written by Eastman and Tom Waltz. This comic will depict Michelangelo training Casey Marie Jones, the daughter of April O’Neil.

“At a broader level, I think these big companies are waiting to see which way the wind blows,” Waltz remarked. “But I’m always optimistic, and I believe things will improve, which will help move projects forward. For now, we focus on what we can control, which is the comics and the core story, making the movie even better when it comes.”
