Federal Authorities Seek User Information from Discord, Reddit, and Others Over Criticism of ICE
As the current administration intensifies ICE operations nationwide, the Department of Homeland Security is increasingly seeking to obtain personal information about anonymous internet users protesting the agency.
Reports indicate that major platforms like Google, Reddit, Discord, and Meta have received numerous administrative subpoenas from the Department of Homeland Security recently. The aim is to uncover the identities of individuals behind accounts that monitor ICE agents’ activities or criticize the agency, which has been involved in at least two fatalities in 2026.
It has been noted that Google, Meta, and Reddit have complied with some of these requests, though it remains unclear if Discord has followed suit.
Discord has faced similar subpoenas from publishers seeking information on users sharing confidential data or engaging in game piracy, including a case involving the distributor of Arc Raiders, Nexon. In legal arguments made in 2024, Discord asserted that user privacy is constitutionally protected. They contended that complying with such orders could infringe on users’ rights to anonymity, a facet of free speech safeguarded by the First Amendment.
Conversely, Reddit has become a hub for users sharing details about ICE activities and facilities in their neighborhoods, especially as individuals are taken off the streets. While ICE agents often conceal their identities, the agency employs facial recognition technology and other surveillance methods to identify individuals they target in real time.
