Clair Obscur Developers Seek Equitable Resolution with ‘L’Académie Clair-Obscur’ Comic Creator

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has made a significant splash as the debut title from Sandfall Interactive, but it hasn’t been without its share of drama. In December, the Indie Game Awards stripped the game of two accolades due to the use of AI-generated assets at launch, which were subsequently removed in a patch. Now, a French author is alleging that the developer is pressuring him to halt sales of his newly released graphic novel, titled L’Académie Clair-Obscur.

In a series of posts on X, author Olivier Gay revealed that he received a legal notice from Sandfall, instructing him to cease selling his comic published by Drakoo, claiming it is capitalizing on the game’s success. Gay explained that he pitched his graphic novel to Drakoo back in 2019 and has a contract dated March 2024 for the current title. Although his work has no connection to Sandfall’s narrative, he has decided to comply with the request, stating he lacks the resources for a legal fight, especially against respected French studios. He plans to rebrand his comic and hopes it continues to thrive.

On Monday, Sandfall Interactive addressed the situation with a brief post on X, acknowledging the discussions and expressing gratitude for the community’s input. They mentioned they are in talks with the publisher and Gay to reach a fair resolution. When asked for further comments, Sandfall representatives directed inquiries to their statement on X.

Gay is correct that his graphic novel bears no resemblance to Expedition 33 in terms of story or characters, focusing instead on a group of students at the Clair-Obscur Academy, a school of magic. However, some users on X have noted that the typography might be a point of contention, as there are visual similarities in how the titles are presented in both works. One user remarked that if they encountered Gay’s comic in a store, it could easily be mistaken for a product related to the game. Currently, there are no official tie-in comics for Expedition 33, though there is a vinyl collection and an art book that was mistakenly confiscated by authorities for resembling an ancient artifact.

The term Clair Obscur is a French translation of chiaroscuro, a concept from Italian art history that emerged during the Renaissance, referring to the contrast between light and dark. This theme is central to the visual and narrative elements of Expedition 33. Sandfall has indicated that Clair Obscur will serve as the franchise name for their debut intellectual property, with game director Guillaume Broche describing Expedition 33 as “one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise” during an interview last summer.
