Sam Riegel Hints at Potential Future for a Critical Role Movie

Critical Role started as a group of passionate voice actors streaming their Dungeons & Dragons campaign on a platform dedicated to geek culture. Fast forward ten years, and this multimedia powerhouse has grown beyond their wildest dreams, launching their own tabletop RPG, nearly 400 episodes of live D&D across four campaigns, two animated series, and a variety of spin-off comics and novels. Now, one of the co-founders has hinted that a movie could be on the horizon.

In a chat with an outlet at Emerald City Comic Con, Sam Riegel, one of the co-founders, dropped an exciting hint about a potential film. “We’re about to pitch — I don’t even know if you guys know this — we’re about to pitch a movie. We’ve got things cooking,” Riegel revealed.

During the Sunday panel at ECCC, Riegel provided a significant clue about the film’s focus. “Would you guys like to see an animated Calamity movie?” he asked the audience, who responded with enthusiastic cheers. Riegel echoed their excitement, saying, “I would too. I would too.”

It’s easy to see why fans are excited about the prospect of an animated film centered on the Calamity War. For those unfamiliar, the Calamity (or the Great Calamity) was a monumental conflict between two factions of gods: the Prime Deities of Exandria and the Betrayer Gods. This divine war spanned roughly two centuries and culminated in the Prime Deities banishing the Betrayer Gods from Exandria, marking the end of the Age of Arcanum and the beginning of the Divergence.

The Calamity has been referenced in both of Critical Role’s animated series, but to truly grasp the events surrounding it, fans should check out the 2022 miniseries, Exandria Unlimited: Calamity, which takes place 1,000 years before Campaign 1: Vox Machina. This miniseries features DM Brennan Lee Mulligan, who is currently leading Critical Role Campaign 4.

While it’s unclear who Critical Role is pitching their movie to, the success of their animated series on Prime Video suggests that a cinematic venture could be the next exciting chapter for the company.
