Rick Goes on a Wild Bender, Causing Chaos for Gnomes in Season 9 Preview of Rick and Morty

Adult Swim’s beloved animated series *Rick and Morty* blends absurd, meta-humor with intricate multiverse narratives that delve into themes of family trauma and nihilism. As the show gears up for its ninth season debuting on May 24, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen assures fans that they can expect a mix of both elements.

“It’s my job to say this show keeps outdoing itself, and thankfully, that’s the truth,” Ouweleen stated. “It’s almost frightening how much talent and creativity this team pours into each season. From the very first frame, viewers will be treated to high-concept madness paired with some of the finest character writing ever seen.”

Series creator Dan Harmon and showrunner Scott Marder crafted seasons 8, 9, and 10 simultaneously, with Harmon revealing that season 9 features a concept he’s long wanted to explore in television or film, finally finding the right approach. Given Harmon’s history of bold storytelling in *Rick and Morty*, this could lead to anything—from transforming characters into David Cronenberg-inspired creatures to Rick’s infamous pickle escapade that tackled his fear of therapy, and uncovering the real reason behind Rick’s genius.

The initial images hint at a blend of home life and multiversal chaos. Rick (voiced by Ian Cardoni) appears to be grappling with a vortex in his garage lab, where he’s also seen wrestling a visibly upset Morty (Harry Belden). Expect Rick to drunkenly rampage through a charming miniature town filled with gnome-like beings, as well as take Morty on a camping trip in an alien forest. A particularly intriguing teaser features a shadowy figure emerging from an RV in a snowy landscape, suggesting a potential spooky episode ahead.

*Rick and Morty* has already secured a renewal through season 12, and a spinoff centered on Rick’s frequent adversary, U.S. President Andre Curtis (voiced by Keith David), is also in development.

Season 9 of *Rick and Morty* premieres at 11 p.m. ET on May 24, with the episode available for digital purchase the following day. The entire season will be streamable in the U.S. starting August 31.
