Clair Obscur Developers Collaborate with L’Académie Clair-Obscur Comic Creator for Unique Solution

Recently, French author Olivier Gay revealed that Sandfall Interactive, the studio behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, had requested he cease sales of his newly released graphic novel, L’Académie Clair-Obscur. In response, Sandfall issued a brief statement on Monday, indicating they were “in contact with the publisher and Olivier to find a fair solution for everyone.” It seems that a resolution has now been reached.

In a message shared on X on Tuesday, Sandfall expressed regret for their delayed communication regarding the “complex” situation.

“Sandfall was working to withdraw the requests from our legal representative, which has now been done. Their role is to protect us against counterfeit products, but the action initiated toward the comic book ‘L’Académie Clair-Obscur’ published in January 2026 does not align with us,” the developer stated (via machine translation). They emphasized their commitment to supporting artists and fostering creativity, concluding with well wishes for Gay and the book’s artist, Grelin.

The specific reasons behind Sandfall’s legal outreach to Gay remain unclear. While Gay’s comic, centered around students at a magic school, bears no resemblance to the plot of Expedition 33, it does share the phrase “Clair Obscur” from art history in its title. Additionally, users on X noted that the typography of L’Académie Clair-Obscur closely resembles that of the game.

Shortly after Sandfall’s announcement, Gay took to X to express his gratitude for the studio’s decision to withdraw their request. He mentioned that the comic would “be able to continue its life,” suggesting that he and publisher Drakoo can proceed with sales without needing to alter the title.

“I won’t hide from you that this is a huge relief for me, and a super move on the studio’s part,” Gay added. He concluded his message with a nod to fans of the game: “For those who come after!”
