Marathon’s Major Update Delivers an Impressive Experience

Marathon has just rolled out its first significant post-launch update, bringing some thoughtful adjustments to the sci-fi extraction shooter. This is another instance of Bungie swiftly enhancing its latest live-service title.

On March 11, the update 1.0.0.4 was released, marking the game’s first major post-launch adjustments. While it doesn’t introduce new content like maps or characters, this update is packed with beneficial changes that should ease some gameplay elements without dulling the game’s edge.

Free kits are receiving ammo boosts, addressing the previous issue where they felt overly punishing due to limited bullets. Additionally, quest objectives will now appear when you’re 20 meters away instead of just 10, making it easier to locate those elusive terminals and items needed for various contracts.

If you enjoy starting or wrapping up your Marathon sessions with Rook but were puzzled by his absence on the map, that was a bug that has now been resolved. Kudos to Bungie for that fix!

Another notable adjustment is a slight nerf to the UESC robot guards. Previously, these bots could quickly overwhelm solo players and even well-equipped teams if mistakes were made. They’ve received minor health and shield reductions, meaning they won’t absorb as many bullets. However, players should still exercise caution, as Bungie intends for these bots to remain a formidable challenge.

“The goal here is to allow your bullets and meds to go further without reducing too much of the UESC’s bite,” Bungie stated in the patch notes. “We hear the feedback loud and clear that players appreciate the friction our UESC combatants provide, and we have no plans to change that direction.”

In addition to this update, Bungie is also focused on enhancing Marathon’s current reward pass, which has been criticized for its lackluster offerings. Currently, it features just one Runner skin and a few uninspired weapon cosmetics. Later this season, Bungie has confirmed that more Runner skins and additional free and premium rewards will be added.

“When you spend in Marathon, we want you to get great value,” Bungie emphasized. “Whether that’s the game, the deluxe edition, the Rewards Pass, or the in-game store.”

The studio has plans for further improvements to the next reward pass, thanking the community for their feedback: “When you take the time to be thoughtful and constructive, it helps us move faster and make better calls, and we’re committed to acting on that as quickly as we can.”

Bungie has indeed been quick to implement changes in response to player feedback. After concerns about premium currency packs seeming designed to shortchange players trying to buy a single skin, Bungie promptly announced that $10 packs will now provide exactly what’s needed for one skin. They’ve also been proactive in expanding the game’s lore, as seen in last week’s ARG linked to an upcoming endgame level.

While Marathon isn’t without its flaws, and I still hope for a duos queue in the near future, Bungie appears dedicated to responding to player feedback swiftly, all while maintaining the game’s challenging nature. I’m eager to see what the coming weeks and months hold for Tau Ceti IV.

Here are the full patch notes for Marathon update 1.0.0.4, now live on PS5, Xbox, and PC:

Thermal Scopes

Overrun

Rook

DEVELOPER NOTE: With this change, we hope to alleviate some of the resource burden in both Solos and Crews when engaging UESC in combat. The goal here is to allow your bullets and meds to go further without reducing too much of the UESC’s bite. We see the feedback loud and clear that players appreciate the friction that our UESC combatants provide, and we have no plans to change that direction.

Introducing NuCaloric Contract

Introducing Traxus Contract

Outpost

DEVELOPER NOTE: We are temporarily disabling the “Broken Wing” entrance into the Pinwheel while we make some tuning changes to it. In its current state, it trivializes entrance into the Pinwheel. We are making some tweaks to maintain the spirit of the “silent” entrance while better matching the risk/reward of the Pinwheel. Runners can continue to take advantage of all other ways into the Pinwheel (including the additional silent method) in the meantime.
