Mega Greninja Joins the Pokémon TCG’s Chaos Rising Set This May

The Pokémon Trading Card Game is diving deeper into the Mega Evolution era this spring with the upcoming expansion, Chaos Rising. The Pokémon Company has announced that this new set will be available worldwide on May 22, with prerelease tournaments taking place from May 9 to May 17. Players can also look forward to its launch in Pokémon TCG Live on May 21.

“Trainers will encounter Mega Floette ex causing chaos as night descends on Lumiose City,” the announcement states. “Players can utilize Mega Greninja ex and other formidable Pokémon, such as Mega Pyroar ex and Mega Dragalge ex, to combat this looming threat.” Alongside these four new cards, a new Espurr card has also been teased.

Chaos Rising will feature five Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, five Pokémon ex, 11 illustration rare Pokémon, 18 ultra rare Pokémon and Trainer cards, as well as six special illustration rare Pokémon and supporter cards. In total, the set will boast over 120 cards, including at least 20 trainer cards and more than 35 cards showcasing special illustrations of trainers and their Pokémon.

This expansion marks the fourth installment in the ongoing Mega Evolution block, which kicked off in late 2025. It reintroduces the Mega Evolution mechanic, now functioning more like traditional evolution rather than relying on a Spirit Link tool card. This new set follows January’s Ascended Heroes, which introduced over 290 new cards, and Perfect Order, set to release on March 27 with more than 120 cards.

The Mega Greninja ex Special Illustration Rare appears to be the standout chase card of this set, and it carries some intriguing lore connections. In the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum fused with his Greninja through a process known as Bond Phenomenon. While this is similar, Ash-Greninja is not technically a Mega Evolution. Although Ash-Greninja has appeared on trading cards before, Greninja didn’t receive an official Mega Evolution form until the 2025 game Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This means Chaos Rising will introduce the first-ever Mega Greninja in the TCG.

While full card lists and product details for Chaos Rising are still under wraps, the expansion is set to further explore the Mega Evolution theme that has been a hallmark of the current era, likely offering collectors a wealth of exciting new chase cards.
