Microsoft’s Copilot AI Assistant Set to Launch on Current-Gen Xbox Consoles This Year

Xbox is gearing up to roll out its Gaming Copilot AI assistant on current-generation consoles this year, as revealed by Sonali Yadav, Xbox’s product manager for gaming AI, during a panel at the Game Developers Conference. She also mentioned that the assistant will be integrated into more services that players frequently use.

Microsoft has been developing this gaming-centric Copilot assistant for several months, launching it in beta on the Xbox mobile app, Windows 11, and Xbox Ally handhelds. Players can summon the Gaming Copilot using voice commands when they find themselves stuck in a game, and the AI is designed to provide helpful suggestions on what to do next. It can also answer questions about a player’s gaming history, share tips or strategies, and recommend games. For instance, players can ask the Gaming Copilot how to defeat a specific boss or what materials are needed to craft a sword in Minecraft.

While Yadav didn’t specify which consoles will support Copilot, the current lineup includes the Xbox Series X | S. Additionally, there’s a Project Helix Xbox in development, marking the company’s first major launch in years without former Xbox chief Phil Spencer leading the charge. Asha Sharma, who previously headed AI development for enterprise teams, took over as CEO of Microsoft Gaming in February, following the departure of former Xbox president Sarah Bond. Project Helix is not expected to reach alpha until 2027 and will also support PC gaming.
