Venture Capitalist Expresses Disappointment Over Gamers’ Aversion to AI

Each year, a survey of game industry professionals is released ahead of the week-long GDC conference, providing insights that often set the tone for the event. This year, one hot-button topic stood out: only 7 percent of respondents viewed generative AI positively for the industry, leaving many executives and investors grappling with the implications during their discussions.

According to reports, Moritz Baier-Lentz from Lightspeed Venture Partners expressed his disappointment regarding the negative sentiment surrounding AI. With investments in several AI companies, including the notable Anthropic, Baier-Lentz hopes that skeptics will come to appreciate the potential of AI, noting that the gaming sector has historically been more open to embracing innovative technologies.

Baier-Lentz also pointed out that one reason for the pessimism may stem from the same factors driving enthusiasm among executives: layoffs. He indicated that workforce reductions are a natural consequence following the surge of investments in digital entertainment during the COVID era, yet many companies seem eager about the prospects of automated labor.

Layoffs represent just one of the significant divides between AI and gaming. Beyond economic concerns, issues like environmental impact and the allocation of resources for data centers are contributing to a RAM shortage, which is driving up hardware prices and making PC gaming increasingly exclusive.

At GDC, Xbox also took the opportunity to discuss their upcoming console, currently known as Project Helix. While Microsoft is heavily invested in AI in other areas, the technology was notably absent from their GDC presentations. It wasn’t until the end of the event that Xbox revealed their AI client, Copilot, will be available on Xbox consoles later this year.
