Top 5 Indie Games to Watch from GDC 2026
I just returned from the GDC Festival of Gaming in San Francisco, previously known as the Game Developers Conference. While the event primarily focuses on educational sessions and networking for developers, I had the chance to dive into several exciting games. Here’s a look at some of my favorites, listed alphabetically. The best part? They’re all set to launch this year, hopefully before Grand Theft Auto VI hits the scene.
**At Fate’s End**
At Fate’s End is a stunning new action-adventure title from Thunder Lotus, the team behind Spiritfarer. This game explores sibling relationships through a mix of exploration and combat. I experienced two battles featuring the first of the main character’s siblings, and even those early encounters were exhilarating, complete with dramatic animations, full-screen lightning attacks, and dialogue choices that can affect the game’s ending. I can’t stop thinking about it! At Fate’s End is slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
**Mina the Hollower**
The latest offering from Yacht Club Games, creators of Shovel Knight, is a tribute to Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy, but with a unique twist: you play as a mouse that can dig underground. Set to launch this spring after a delay last October, I had a chance to play a new demo and was impressed. Unlike my previous experience with the PC demo, this time I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the world, battling tough enemies, and uncovering hidden secrets. Mina the Hollower is set to release this spring on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
**The Melty Way**
The Melty Way combines challenging platforming reminiscent of Super Meat Boy with a gooey twist: you control a cute little slime that melts as it moves through the world. As you shrink, you gain advantages like higher jumps and the ability to squeeze into tighter spaces. However, if you don’t reach a checkpoint or complete the level in time, your adorable slime will perish, and it’s hard not to feel bad about that. The Melty Way is launching in early access on Steam on April 24th.
**Poke a Nose**
In Poke a Nose, developed by Jelle van Meerendonk, you take on the role of a flying severed hand that collects toilet paper and finishes levels by poking noses. The concept is delightfully absurd, and maneuvering the hand requires some skill, making it satisfying to poke a nose at the end of a level. The game is aiming for a 2026 release on PC, though van Meerendonk has mentioned that early 2027 is “more likely.”
**Super Meat Boy 3D**
Continuing the Super Meat Boy legacy, Super Meat Boy 3D promises a challenging 3D take on the notoriously difficult 2D platformer. I was pleased to see many familiar elements from the original, such as floaty jumps and buzzsaws scattered throughout the levels. While the new perspective sometimes led to confusing jumps that resulted in untimely deaths, the quick restart feature kept the frustration at bay. Super Meat Boy 3D is set to launch in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
