X-Men ’97 Launches New Comic Series as Season 2 Approaches
For fans eagerly anticipating season 2 of X-Men ’97 and the resolution to that intense cliffhanger, there’s some exciting news that might help ease the wait. Marvel Comics has just announced a prelude series for the upcoming season, and the release date of the comic could provide a clue about when we can expect the animated series to return.
Titled X-Men ’97: Season Two, this new comic is crafted by writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin. It will pick up right where the first season concluded, diving into the challenges faced by the X-Men in a world that fears and loathes mutants. Marvel teased, “Follow the X-Men left behind in a world that hunts and hates mutantkind! Can they survive? And just where — or when — are the X-Men now?!” Additionally, the prequel comic promises to introduce “major new characters — and teams — joining the cast,” hinting at potential new mutants and perhaps even more surprises for the second season.
Foxe emphasized that the prequel will not shy away from the dramatic cliffhanger that season 1 left us with, stating, “our prequel for Season Two doesn’t take any cheats or shortcuts around that wild status quo.”
This prequel will consist of five issues, with the first installment set to release on June 3. This timing suggests that season 2 of X-Men ’97 is still aiming for a summer 2026 premiere, and it might arrive sooner than we think.
Interestingly, while one might expect a prequel comic to conclude before a new season starts, that wasn’t the case with the first season. A tie-in prequel comic was announced before the show had a specific premiere date, and issue #1 was released just a week after the first episode hit Disney Plus. Will we see a similar rollout for season 2 and its accompanying comic? We’ll have to keep an eye out for more updates.
So far, two covers for X-Men ’97: Season Two #1 have been revealed. The main cover is illustrated by Todd Nauck, while a variant inspired by season 1 and Marvel vs. Capcom – Clash of Super Heroes is created by Jhony Caballero.
