Firefly Makes a Comeback as an Animated Series with Joss Whedon’s Support
After weeks of teasing a significant announcement, Nathan Fillion took the stage at Awesome Con on March 15 to reveal that a new season of Firefly is on the way. The twist? This beloved live-action space-western will be reimagined as an animated series, set between the conclusion of the original show and the follow-up film, Serenity.
Joining Fillion on stage were his fellow Firefly cast members: Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. Adam Baldwin, who will also reprise his role, was not present. Fillion showcased concept art for the new series from animation studio ShadowMachine, known for projects like BoJack Horseman and Robot Chicken.
In an Instagram video, Fillion shared the exciting news with fans, reaffirming several details initially revealed at Awesome Con. The Firefly reboot already has a script and is being helmed by showrunners Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters, who are also a couple and first connected through Firefly, according to Fillion. The revival has received the green light from 20th Century Studios, the original producer, along with Disney, its current owner.
Most importantly, Fillion confirmed that they have the backing of Firefly’s creator, Joss Whedon, the mastermind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who has stepped back from Hollywood following various allegations from former colleagues. While Whedon is not involved in the revival, his approval adds a layer of authenticity to the project.
Firefly originally aired for one season in late 2002 before being canceled by Fox. The 2005 film Serenity continued the story and provided some closure, but fans have been clamoring for more for the past two decades. Now, it seems Firefly is finally set for a much-anticipated return.
Firefly season 1 is available for streaming on Hulu.
