Exciting New Insights Unveiled in the Latest Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Trailer
Darth Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) is making a comeback in the animated series *Maul: Shadow Lord*, set to premiere on Disney Plus on April 6. This new adventure sees Maul attempting to rebuild his criminal empire on the planet Janix, and the latest trailer hints at a deeper narrative for fans to uncover.
In the trailer, Maul expresses his frustration over the Empire’s betrayal, igniting a desire for revenge and the need for a powerful weapon to combat the Imperials. We catch a glimpse of Devon Izara, a young Twi’lek Jedi who, like many others post-Order 66, is in hiding from the Empire.
“Together we can destroy the Empire,” Maul declares.
The scene shifts to Devon discussing Maul’s proposal with her reptilian Jedi companion, who warns her that while the Empire is their shared enemy, Maul can “never” be trusted as an ally.
There’s been speculation that Devon might be Disney’s take on Darth Talon, a character from the now non-canon Star Wars Expanded Universe who was Maul’s apprentice. If this theory holds, it raises questions about her fate, especially since a more worn-down Maul later appears to Ezra Bridger in *Star Wars: Rebels*, seeking a new apprentice.
This leads to a pressing question: If Maul is indeed looking to make Devon his apprentice, what does that mean for her reptilian friend? While Maul despises the Empire, he adheres to Sith traditions, and the Rule of Two dictates that there can only be one master and one apprentice. It would be a shame to lose such a unique character without a proper send-off.
Fans first encountered the Eleventh Brother in the *Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi* episode “Resolve,” where he met his end at the hands of Ahsoka Tano. However, his story didn’t end there, as he later appeared in *Star Wars: Tales of the Empire*.
The Eleventh Brother isn’t the only familiar face in the new trailer. Marrok, another Inquisitor, is set to clash with Captain Brander Lawson, a disgruntled officer on Janix determined to capture Maul. Unlike the Eleventh Brother, who fell during the Empire’s reign, Marrok survived, promising to be a persistent adversary for Maul and his crew throughout this animated saga.
The true identities of the Eleventh Brother and Marrok remain a mystery, but with *Maul: Shadow Lord* launching shortly after *Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith*, there’s potential for significant revelations about their pasts as former Jedi.
In addition to rallying criminals, Maul appears to be reconnecting with fellow Zabrak warriors. The trailer showcases a group of Zabrak fighters armed with rocket launchers and blasters, targeting Imperial forces. These could be the criminal Zabrak Maul has allied with, or they might be Nightbrothers—male Zabrak warriors historically under the influence of the Nightsister clans.
Having been raised as a Nightbrother under Mother Talzin, Maul is acutely aware of the struggles faced by his kin. With the Nightsisters nearly eradicated, only a handful of Nightbrothers and Nightsisters remain. While we know Maul will eventually return to Dathomir during the Imperial era, the timeline of his visit remains uncertain. If he travels to Dathomir after his time on Janix, he could enlist the Nightbrothers to bolster his criminal empire.
*Maul: Shadow Lord* will be available for streaming on Disney Plus starting April 6.
