Starfield’s upcoming expansion features a galaxy under siege by deadly robots.
Starfield is set to receive an exciting new story expansion featuring a menacing army of killer robots, as announced by Bethesda Game Studios. Titled Terran Armada, this expansion will launch on April 7, coinciding with Starfield’s debut on PlayStation 5 after a two-year period of Xbox exclusivity.
Terran Armada marks the second significant expansion for Starfield, following the 2024 release of Shattered Space. That previous expansion took players to the home planet of House Va’ruun, a faction known for its religious fervor and devotion to a deity called the Great Serpent. However, Shattered Space faced criticism for its brevity, narrow focus, limited environment, and its $30 price tag.
In contrast, Terran Armada promises a broader experience. Players will confront a human antagonist force that commands the army of lethal robots, launching invasions across the Settled Systems, the game’s expansive setting. Bethesda refers to these invasions as “incursions,” and it’s up to players to combat this threat. The expansion will also introduce new weapons, ships, characters, crew members, and enemies.
“After the launch of Shattered Space, we received feedback indicating a desire for a more traditional Bethesda experience—something with a handcrafted location and a story that players could immerse themselves in,” said Tim Lamb, the lead creative producer for Starfield, during a group interview. “However, after its release, we also heard calls for a narrative with a more significant galactic impact, something that spans across the stars.”
Terran Armada is designed to complement Starfield’s Free Lanes update, which will also be released on April 7. This free patch will introduce the ability to fly between planets, but players will need to navigate carefully, as the Terran Armada’s forces can disrupt travel, adding a layer of tension to a previously criticized empty galactic map.
“In most situations, players could choose to avoid ship combat by powering up their grav drive and jumping away,” Lamb explained. “Now, the Terran Armada possesses technology that can prevent escape, but only within a certain radius. Players will need to strategize—either attempt to flee and evade combat or use the star map to steer clear of the system entirely.”
Terran Armada will be included in Starfield’s premium edition, priced at $69.99, or available separately for $9.99. To access the expansion, players must first progress through the main quest and reach The Lodge.
