Sony Revisits 3-Year-Old Blog to Announce Game Shutdown
Firewall Ultra is set to shut down later this year, and the announcement came in a rather unexpected way. Instead of the usual channels like Twitter or Reddit, Sony quietly updated a blog post from 2023 that celebrated the game’s launch, adding a note confirming its impending closure by October.
On Wednesday, as noted by an outlet, an August 22, 2023 post that highlighted the release of the online-only PSVR2 shooter Firewall Ultra received an update from Sony. This update confirmed that the live-service VR game will be completely unplayable after September 17.
Update (March 2026): Online features for Firewall Ultra will be terminated and will no longer be available on September 17, 2026. Since the game requires an online connection to play, it will be unplayable starting September 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM PDT (GMT -7).
Sony has already removed Firewall Ultra from the PlayStation Store. The studio behind the game, First Contact Entertainment, was dissolved in late 2023. It’s surprising that it took this long for Sony to announce Firewall Ultra’s end. Interestingly, the closure was also mentioned in a support page update in Japan, which seems like a more appropriate way to handle the situation.
Ironically, the blog post that Sony updated not only celebrated Firewall Ultra’s launch but also outlined a post-launch roadmap for new content. A video that was embedded in the blog has seemingly been taken down from YouTube as well. The entire blog now stands as a bittersweet reminder of a game that Sony once had high hopes for, now on the verge of being discontinued along with the studio that created it.
Firewall Ultra launched in August 2023 on PS5, exclusively for PSVR2, serving as a sequel to the original Firewall shooter for the original PSVR, which was one of the platform’s standout titles. Unfortunately, Firewall Ultra didn’t resonate well with fans or critics and is now facing permanent closure. Meanwhile, the original Firewall continues to thrive.
