Windows 11 Introduces a Movable Taskbar Feature

After nearly five years, Microsoft is reintroducing the option to move the Windows taskbar to the top or sides of your screen. This feature is part of a broader set of updates coming to Windows 11 this year, aimed at addressing ongoing concerns about the operating system’s performance, reliability, and overall user experience.

“Repositioning the taskbar is one of the top asks we’ve heard from you,” states Windows chief Pavan Davuluri. “We are introducing the ability to reposition it to the top or sides of your screen, making it easier to personalize your workspace.”

This new taskbar functionality will be available to Windows Insiders in the coming weeks, with a wider rollout planned for all Windows 11 users later this year. Additionally, Microsoft is developing a smaller taskbar option that will also be released later this year.

The movable taskbar has been a staple of Windows for decades, but it was removed when Windows 11 launched in 2021. Many users, including myself, were frustrated with the new taskbar, which lacked features like displaying the time and date on multiple monitors, small icons, and the ability to reposition it. The redesign stemmed from an earlier version intended for Windows 10X, which was meant for dual-screen devices before evolving into Windows 11 for laptops.

Microsoft has been gradually restoring many of the beloved features from the Windows 10 taskbar, and it has recently begun testing an agenda calendar view in the Windows 11 notification center, a feature that was also absent in the initial release of Windows 11 despite being present in Windows 10.
