Community Steps Up to Safeguard Extensive Visual Novel Game Database Following Founder’s Passing

In 2007, Yoran Heling, known in the gaming community as Yorhel, launched The Visual Novel Database after struggling to find detailed information about Ever 17: The Out of Infinity. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the most extensive and enduring resources dedicated to gaming history, archiving a genre that, while niche, has had a significant impact on the industry. Recently, site moderators confirmed the sad news that Heling passed away on March 17th.

“As many of you have already suspected, the VNDB.org has lost its founder and soul, Yorhel,” wrote a moderator. “He will be dearly missed by the moderation team and by fans of visual novels. He was a great friend and a great boss.”

The VNDB offers much more than just release dates, titles, and sub-genres. Its entries provide in-depth insights into the development teams, including programmers and voice actors, character details, average game lengths, commercial availability, and community rankings. It even catalogs related materials, such as anime adaptations, making it a treasure trove of information for a genre rich in history and often considered esoteric.

Visual novels are a cornerstone of the video game landscape. Many of today’s leading studios began their journeys by selling VNs in local computer shops. Notably, Hideo Kojima’s early works, which paved the way for Metal Gear Solid, included influential titles like Policenauts, Snatcher, and Tokimeki Memorial.

While visual novels have maintained a strong following in Japan, their international appeal has surged, with titles like Ace Attorney, Doki Doki Literature Club, and the Danganronpa series gaining recognition worldwide. The accessibility of these games, along with tools like Twine, has made VNs particularly popular in the indie scene. Resources like the VNDB have played a crucial role in helping these games gain traction.

In light of their founder’s passing, the remaining moderators of VNDB are exploring ways to ensure the site’s preservation. “At the moment, I can only say that we are working on certain channels to preserve the website,” a moderator stated, “but we cannot provide much information today.”
